The Toronto Holocaust Museum and the Toronto Jewish Film Foundation present a screening of the new documentary, Nathan-ism (2023, English, 79 minutes).
Official Selection, Hot Docs Festival
Official Selection, Docaviv International Documentary Film Festival
At the end of the Second World War, Nathan Hilu, the son of Syrian Jewish immigrants, received a life-changing assignment from the U.S. Army to guard the top Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg trials. This experience fuelled a lifetime of artistic inspiration for Nathan, who spent the next 70 years obsessively creating a visual narrative from his memories. But what happens when those memories take on a life of their own?
The encounters that changed his life recur again and again in his artwork with vivid clarity: conversations with Albert Speer, a long kiss between Göring and his wife, words he said to each of the accused before leading them to the gallows.
Nathan-ism is a fascinating look at one man’s need to share truths with a world that does not always want to listen.
Director Elan Golod will join us remotely for a Q&A following the screening.
